Samuel Miele, a fundraiser for the campaign of Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was indicted on Wednesday for allegedly impersonating a high-ranking aide to a member of the House in order to raise money.

Miele was accused of using an email account bearing the name of the aide to send fraudulent fundraising solicitations to potential contributors for Santos around the span between August 2021 and December 2021, according to the indictment. He also allegedly signed emails with the aide’s name.

USA TODAY and multiple other news outlets have reported that Miele previously identified himself as the chief of staff for House Speaker McCarthy, R-Calif., though the Wednesday indictment does not name the aide.

Julie Hempel’s “Gained in Translation” explores the ways in which cultures are enriched by words, phrases, or concepts translated from other languages.

Take a look around and you’ll find borrowed treasure tucked away into every corner of our daily discourse, from the wildly popular Squid Game to the kindergarten school year. Hempel reminds us that enriching our understanding of multiple languages can change our world in wonderful ways.

Julie is a translator from Spanish to English. Her primary interests are the intersections of race, class, and gender in contemporary Mexican and Chicanx literature, as well as the hybrid identities in Asian-Latin American narrative and poetry.

She has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Latin American literature and teaches at Austin College, where she is also the Director of the Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies. She has translated works by Mexican writers: Aurora Velasco, Carmen Villoro, Erik de Luna, and Peruvian writer: Siu Kam Wen.
