• Self-Compassion in Uncertain Times | Randall Birnberg | TEDxRWTHAachen

Randall talks about how self compassion and positive thinking can help us deal with our past. He shares the steps to self compassion and the habits that can make you more compassionate.

For over 30 years, Randall Birnberg, an American educator and psychologist, has been helping to develop the human potential that lies within each individual. Whether it was the Native Americans "on the rez" of New Mexico or Italian street children in Rome, he always provided the crucial psychological tools to work on individual consciousness and self-compassion.

Twenty four years ago, he brought his knowledge and experience to Europe. In university lectures, seminars and coaching, he "taught" doctoral students, teachers, employees of international companies … as well as private individuals throughout Europe. As a happiness researcher at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Randall works within the relatively new science of happiness, also known as "Positive Psychology".

Positive Psychology deals with human emotions, strengths, relationships, the meaning of life and our achievements. Ultimately, through our well-being & happiness, we become more resilient and more able to withstand uncertain times as we our experiencing today. Randall's current passion is to help Ukrainian refugees living in Germany to integrate into the German culture i.e., by teaching self-compassion techniques, resilience and love-kindness meditations.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

  • Why The U.S. Can’t Solve Hunger

33.8 million Americans didn’t have adequate access to food, according to the latest report from the USDA. That’s despite the fact that U.S. is one of the wealthiest nations in the world based on almost every metric. In response, spending on food assistance programs like SNAP has grown exponentially, reaching a record of $182.5 billion in 2021. But food insecurity has remained relatively the same as it was in 2001. So why are so many Americans still hungry and what can be done to solve it?

  • Why we should rethink drinking culture | Jen Gilhoi | TEDxEdina

Why aren’t you drinking? The question is pervasive in social spaces everywhere, and it can be a challenging question to navigate for those choosing not to drink. But how did we get here, when half of Americans say they’d like to drink less or not at all? In this talk, Jen Gilhoi explores ways to evolve our drinking culture to make it ok for anyone, anywhere, for any reason not to drink alcohol - and open themselves up to true connection and belonging.

  • Why #Marlboro Maker Altria Is Betting On Smoke-Free Products

Cigarettes were once prominently displayed in #Hollywood films and in glossy magazines. But decades of evidence that smoking kills has caused consumption to plummet. The tobacco industry sold less than 11 billion packs of cigarettes in the U.S. in 2020 down from more than 21 billion packs two decades earlier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The number of smokers has dwindled as well. Almost 57% of American men smoked cigarettes in 1955, the #CDC says. Today just 11.5% of U.S. adults, or about 28 million Americans, are smokers.

That has caused an existential crisis for tobacco companies. Altria, the parent company of Philip Morris #USA and the nation's largest #tobacco company reported an almost 10% drop in cigarette sales in 2022 from the year prior. The maker of Marlboro’s says it wants to help #smokers transition away from cigarettes to what it calls “reduced harm alternatives” like e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn products. But Altria’s “Moving Beyond Smoking” campaign has raised eyebrows among its critics who claim the company is still hooked on cigarettes.

In 2022 cigarettes and cigars made up about 89% of the company's sales. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. accounting for more than 480,000 deaths annually.

So are e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn products really less harmful than traditional cigarettes and what impact will those devices have on kids? Watch the video to learn more.

  • How The U.S. Is Stalling A Recession

Wall Street investors remain braced for a recession. But a turndown hasn't yet materialized, due to strong demand from U.S. consumers. Spending makes up roughly 68% of the U.S. economy.

It's remained strong amid high inflation as high-income Americans draw down generous savings accrued in the pandemic. Lower-income Americans who may have exhausted their pandemic savings are increasingly turning to credit cards to finance daily life.

  • Biden pardons Thanksgiving turkeys: 'There's no "fowl" play'

President Biden pardoned turkeys Chocolate and Chip at a White House ceremony on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022. The broad-breasted white turkeys, weighing in at 46 and 47 pounds, respectively, were raised by National Turkey Federation chairman Ronnie Parker at Circle S Ranch in Monroe, N.C. Chocolate's and Chips' plans include earning an honorary poultry science degree from N.C. State University. The Tar Heel state ranks first in the nation for poultry production and second for turkey production.

"We can't forget the reason for Thanksgiving in the first place," Biden said at the event. "That's what the Thanksgiving tradition is all about, being grateful for what we have," Biden said as he reflected on being grateful for the medical community and COVID-19 vaccines to enable Americans to gather safely this year.

  • Why Americans Wait So Long For Organs

There are more than 100,000 people in the United States waiting for an organ transplant, and they could be waiting a while. A little more than 50% of people waiting for an organ will receive one within five years because of the shortage of organs available.

The organ donation system in the U.S. is designed to save as many lives as possible without wasting available organs, but there are built-in inequalities that affect who has access. People of color, people of lower socioeconomic status and women receive transplants at a lower rate and are also more likely to wait longer for an organ than patients with similar medical issues.

The medical community has been working on ways to increase the supply by using live donors for organs like kidneys, organs from animals and even mechanical organs. Watch the video above to learn how the U.S. organ transplant system works and what we can do to increase supply while decreasing inequality.
