  • At least 36 dead as Hawaii fires devastate island of Maui – BBC News

At least 36 people have died on the Hawaii island of Maui, as devastating fires swept across the land.

People were reportedly forced to flee the flames by jumping into the ocean, with the US Coast Guard rescuing at least a dozen people from the waters.

Authorities say it's too early to know the extent of the damage, but at least 270 buildings have been destroyed.

Efforts to bring the fires under control continue, but flames, fanned by hurricane winds, have reduced large parts of the historic town of Lahaina to rubble.

  • Russian police forcefully detain activists supporting Putin foe Navalny in Moscow

Russian police forcefully detain activists supporting Putin foe Navalny in Moscow. Risking their own prison terms, some Navalny (inset) supporters in Russia marked his birthday by holding individual pickets, while others painted graffiti.

Police quickly detained many for questioning, and officers maintained a raised presence in downtown Moscow and moved quickly to round up those who tried to stage individual pickets on Pushkin Square (right) and elsewhere in the capital.

Mr Navalny's supporters also demonstrated in St Petersburg and other Russian cities, holding one-person pickets and leaving signs and graffiti in Mr Navalny's support, wishing him 'Happy Birthday Alexei' (top right) or demanding 'Freedom for Alexei Navalny' (bottom right).

Pro-Navalny demonstrations were held in several European cities, with many holding 'Free Navalny' posters (pictured left: activists in Georgia). Navalny's team says he has been harassed in prison and kept in a 'punishment cell' for minor transgressions. His supporters say the authorities are trying to crush his morale.

The arch-foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin said he woke up in a punishment cell on his 47th birthday, adding in a message published on social media that it was his 16th such stint.

  • Why California’s High-Speed Rail Is Taking So Long

In 2008, California voted yes on a $9 billion bond authorization to build the nation’s first high-speed railway. The plan is to build an electric train that will connect Los Angeles with the Central Valley and then San Francisco in two hours and forty minutes. At the time, it was estimated the project would be complete by 2020 and cost $33 billion.

But 15 years later, there is not a single mile of track laid, and there isn’t enough money to finish the project. The latest estimates show it will cost $88 billion to $128 billion to complete the entire system from LA to San Francisco. Inflation and higher construction costs have contributed to the high price tag. Despite the funding challenges, progress has been made on the project.

119 miles are under construction in California’s Central Valley. The project recently celebrated its 10,000th worker on the job. The infrastructure design work is complete, and 422 out of 500 miles have been environmentally cleared. CNBC visited California’s Central Valley, where construction is underway, to find out what it will take to complete what would be the nation’s largest infrastructure project.

  • The 4 phases of retirement | Dr. Riley Moynes | TEDxSurrey

Imagine squeezing all the juice out of retirement! When interviewed on his research, Dr. Riley Moynes commented, “I wish I knew then what I know now about the psychological challenges that accompany retirement. It would have made things much clearer and easier.”

By interviewing hundreds of retirees, he has discovered a framework that can help make more sense of this challenging chapter of our lives…one that, for many, could last for 30 years or more.
If you’re retired, this talk will make things much clearer for you. If you’re not, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect when that time comes. Riley has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning four decades in both public and private sectors.

In public education, he served as a teacher, Department Head, a Superintendent and a Director of Education. He also authored several textbooks including a History of Russia, and a World Religions text.

In the private sector, he was a Founding Partner of a national wealth management firm, author of a book entitled The Money Coach which enjoyed sales of over 200,000 copies in six editions, and co-author of several editions of Top Funds.

Since stepping back from day-to-day involvement in financial services, Riley researches and writes reader-friendly publications on topics of general interest, and presents Workshops across the country based on those publications.

One of his most recent books, The Four Phases of Retirement, became a Canadian best-seller within 12 months of publication, and is the basis of his TEDx Talk.

In the book, he explains how he waltzed through Phase One of retirement, struggled in Phase Two, tried a dozen ventures in Phase Three and now in Phase Four, assists others as they navigate their way through the psychological changes and challenges almost everyone faces in retirement. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
