• At least 36 dead as Hawaii fires devastate island of Maui – BBC News

At least 36 people have died on the Hawaii island of Maui, as devastating fires swept across the land.

People were reportedly forced to flee the flames by jumping into the ocean, with the US Coast Guard rescuing at least a dozen people from the waters.

Authorities say it's too early to know the extent of the damage, but at least 270 buildings have been destroyed.

Efforts to bring the fires under control continue, but flames, fanned by hurricane winds, have reduced large parts of the historic town of Lahaina to rubble.

  • North Korea fires intercontinental ballistic missile as US tensions grow - BBCNews

North Korea has fired a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile Japanese and South Korean officials report.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, speaking at the Nato summit described these actions as a threat to “Japan, the region and the international community” following the missile landing in Japanese waters.

Pyongyang's launch comes after it threatened retaliation against what it said were recent US spy plane incursions over its territory.

Washington has dismissed the accusations, saying its military patrols are in line with international law.

Tensions have been growing in the region, as North Korea has already fired 12 long range missiles this year.
