  • Why America’s Retailers Like Target Fail Abroad | CNBC Marathon

From Target and McDonald’s to Harley-Davidson, CNBC Marathon explores why some U.S. retailers struggle to make it abroad.

Target’s first and only foray into international markets happened in 2013 in Canada. The retailer opened a total of 133 stores in just over a year. But the expansion didn’t go as planned. By April 2015, Target withdrew from the North American neighbor and closed all locations. Poor real estate decisions, weak leadership, and major SAP systems errors contributed to the company failing in Canada. Target lost $4.1 billion in after-tax losses in just one year as a result of the fallout. The company has no plans to expand internationally anytime soon.

McDonald’s is synonymous with fast-food in many parts of the world, but there is one country where it’s failed to capture national attention. Iceland celebrated the fast-food chain when it entered in 1993, but a global economic collapse during the next 15 years forced McDonald’s to exit the Nordic region.

And Harley-Davidson may be the biggest name in American motorcycles, but the U.S. market is aging and shrinking. India and southeast Asia, with massive and growing markets, offered Harley-Davidson hope. But the legendary maker of big iron ‘hogs’ faces fierce competition in India. In order to succeed, Harley will need to make smaller and cheaper bikes that its most loyal fans might not recognize.

  • From Shake Shack To Mirror, Start-Up Success Stories | Founder Effect Marathon

What do fast-casual chain Shake Shack, online grocery retailer Misfits Market and fitness company MIRROR have in common? Founders who saw opportunity where others didn’t and the ambition to see their dreams through.

Shake Shack began as a hot dog cart in 2001 in New York City’s Madison Square Park by famed restaurateur Danny Meyer. The menu was handwritten by Meyer on a single sheet of paper in about 10 minutes and is about 85% the same today.

Brynn Putnam, the CEO and founder of MIRROR, secured $3 million in venture capital to fund her tech-based fitness company on the same day that she gave birth to her son. In the summer of 2020, Putnam sold MIRROR for $500 million to Lululemon.

Abhi Ramesh landed on the idea to sell ugly fruits and vegetables while apple picking with his girlfriend. In 2020, Misfits Market shipped 77 million pounds of food to more than 400,000 households across the U.S. Since launching in 2018, Misfits Market has expanded to both coasts, has over 1,000 employees and has received over $300 million in funding.

All three founders made costly mistakes along the way, but were able to see past their hardships to take their idea from a dream to a successful business. Watch this Founder Effect marathon to learn more.

  • What is the true quality difference between affordable generic store brand groceries—aka private brands—and national name brands?

It might be surprising to learn that many times the only difference between private and name brands is the label on the box.

Retailers and manufacturers try to keep this info under wraps, but there's a few sneaky methods you can use to find out.
